Nowa Łaźnia

Utopia Home is a project carried being out by the Łaźnia Nowa Theatre from Cracow.

Łaźnia Nowa has its roots and energy source in Nowa Huta. It was here, in the post-industrial workshops of the former Mechanical School Complex, that Bartosz Szydłowski and Małgorzata Szydłowska fulfilled their dream and established a theatre open to artists and local residents. It was based on thir long-term experience gained at the Łaźnia Theatre Association. It found its artistic home at the heart of a housing estate in Nowa Huta. In the 2019/2020 season, Łaźnia celebrates its 25th anniversary, over 15 years of which were spent in Nowa Huta.

Łaźnia derivesits best qualities from Nowa Huta , such as honesty and industriousness, openness and trust. At the same time, it cherishes the memory of the difficult history of this district and its residents’ difficult present. The projects carried out by Bartosz Szydłowski and Małgorzata Szydłowska are mostly social and participatory undertakings. Amateurs from Nowa Huta take part in performances and get on stage with professional actors. In this way, Bartosz Szydłowski and Małgorzata Szydłowska create a space for sharing experiences, which leads to situations which often push both sides out of their comfort zones. Performances by Łaźnia Nowa (so far, the theatre has put on about 50 performances) are often staged abroad and awarded.
